Averbode
Brand mascot design

Averbode is a publishing house — they have been Belgium’s market leader in educational magazines for dozens of years.

A new gift shop

Averbode was launching their new gift shop and was looking for a way to bring it to life.

Their agency Bonka Circus asked me to design a brand mascot suited to the educational products in the shop.

Meet Stijn het brein

Or Brian the brain for the English speaking folks.

Concept design

Averbode already had a pretty clear idea about their mascot type. In this case I was able to focus on his design and personality.

Sketch explorations

We started out with explorations for the form and shape. These are usually done with rough thumbnail sketches.

Room for revisions

The client selected one of the proposals and we implemented their remarks to get the end result.

Brand Mascot assets

In this step we created a bunch of different poses and expressions for Stijn. In some of them I also gave him accessories to fit the seasonal event.

Illustration

These are some examples of illustrated settings. Stijn is hanging out and making jokes on Averbode’s landing pages and social ads. Unfortunately he loves word puns.

Patterns

To celebrate the seasonal events and dress up their gift shop, we also created some seasonal patterns. This way they can adjust the mood to the event and products they are promoting.

“Tim’s resourcefulness helped us boost the concept of our brand mascot Stijn. His illustration style really fits Averbode’s new brand identity: minimalistic, fun and a little wacky.”
